Emergency Duty Service

Emergency Duty Service

If an emergency occurs, the highly skilled EDS team will provide person-centred interventions to safeguard Manchester residents.

These will occur outside of office hours, be urgent in nature, and pose an unacceptable risk to a person’s health and well-being if left unresolved. The Emergency Duty Service is not a continuation of daytime Manchester City Council or Greater Manchester Mental Health services.

In their role as Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs), our staff:

  • Specialise in the assessment of people under the Mental Health Act 1983, working with the person and partners to achieve the best outcomes
  • Provide an emergency social work service for people in crisis necessary to meet any urgent care need

The team consists of:

  • Service Manager
  • Practice Supervisor
  • Team Manager
  • 9 Approved Mental Health Practitioners (AMHPs)

Our practice is underpinned by a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to continuous professional improvements.

Our practice focuses on people’s strengths — unlocking people’s potential to lead a happy, independent, and fulfilling life, based on individual strengths and aspirations.

A high proportion of the work carried out by the EDS team is to conduct Mental Health Act Assessments citywide; these include locations at all three Accident & Emergency Departments – Wythenshawe, Manchester Royal Infirmary and North Manchester General Hospital, on wards across all hospitals, care homes, custody suites and home addresses.

The team also respond to Adult Social Care related referrals. Examples include:

  • No access to services
  • Carer breakdown
  • Equipment failure
  • Financial hardship
  • Homelessness
  • Other related safeguarding concerns (that fall within the provisions of the Care Act 2014)

The service operates Monday to Friday from 3:00pm to 9:30am.

Two Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHPs) operate from 3:00pm to 2:00am and a third is on duty from 10:30pm to 9:30am.

On weekends and Bank Holidays, EDS operates 24 hours.
