Free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Event in Manchester
The NHS is inviting eligible men to attend a free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening event in Manchester this May. AAA screening is a vital preventive health measure that can detect a potentially symptomless, life-threatening condition before it becomes critical.
The screening process is quick, simple, and completely painless—just a one-off ultrasound scan of the abdomen that takes less than 10 minutes. A trained technician will measure the diameter of the aorta, the main blood vessel carrying blood from the heart through the abdomen. Results are provided immediately.
Often referred to as the “silent killer,” AAAs typically develop without noticeable symptoms. When an AAA ruptures, it can be fatal in up to 80% of cases, making early detection through screening essential. Risk factors include being male, aged over 65, a history of smoking, high blood pressure, and a family history of AAA.
Screening Event Details:
- Date: Saturday 3rd May 2025
- Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm
- Location: Moss Side Millennium Powerhouse, 140 Raby Street, Moss Side, Manchester M14 4SL
- Eligibility: Men aged 64–66 who have not previously been screened
- Contact: AAA Screening Team – 0161 291 5716
In addition to AAA screening, Neighbourhood Health Champions will be on-site offering free blood pressure checks, making this a valuable opportunity to look after your overall health.
Regular screening has been shown to significantly reduce AAA-related deaths. If an aneurysm is detected early, it can be monitored or treated before becoming dangerous. Small aneurysms are typically monitored, while larger ones may require surgical repair.
Residents of Manchester and surrounding areas who meet the criteria are encouraged to attend this essential health event. A 10-minute scan could save your life – don’t miss it.
