Children’s Bladder and Bowel Service
The Children’s Bladder and Bowel Service supports children and families with bladder and bowel concerns – including toilet training, day and night time wetting and constipation. This service is for Manchester only.
The aim of the service is to provide high-quality advice, care and support to parents and carers to improve bladder and bowel (continence) problems for children. Our team of specialists will work in partnership with families to understand the cause of problems and agree plans to resolve.
We see children who have problems with:
- Daytime wetting
- Night time wetting
- Children not toilet trained due to a physical or learning disability
- Children who aren’t able to become toilet trained and who need continence products – over 5 years old
- Chronic constipation – over 1 year old
We provide evidence-based continence assessments to children from age 1 year to 16 years (up to their 19th birthday if they have special needs) with bladder and bowel problems – identifying and implementing the most appropriate care pathway for the child and evaluating the care. We hold clinics at various health centres across the city and also see some children in school or at home depending on their needs. We support children who are not able to become toilet trained and who need continence products.
Children can be referred by their parent or a health care professional with the child or parents’ consent. The child should have a Manchester GP. Referrals from health care professionals to be made via the CCS1 Children and Young People’s Service referral form, please email referrals to mft.jointchildrenscontinence@nhs.net. Please note that there will likely be a waiting time for support and this may be up to 12 months.
Referrals are triaged each morning and afternoon:
