Community Paediatric Service
Community Paediatricians are specialist children’s doctors with training and expertise in developmental paediatrics and disability, social paediatrics (including child protection), educational paediatrics and public health for children.
The community paediatricians provide specialist paediatric services to children and young people who are registered with a Manchester GP or attend a special school in Manchester.
The community paediatricians provide specialist paediatric services to children and young people aged 0-18 years (19 years for young people with a disability), who are registered with a Manchester GP or attend a special school in Manchester. They are seen in clinics and health centres, as well as in children’s centres, schools and patient’s homes. Referrals predominantly relate to concerns about children’s behaviour, developmental progress, education and social circumstances.
Each senior doctor provides general services within a geographical area and also has a locality and/or city-wide responsibility in his or her area of special expertise (eg child protection, ‘Our Children’, adoption and fostering, vision impairment, complex neurodisability, palliative care). The citywide team includes the designated doctors for child protection and ‘Our Children’ (looked after children) and the lead for the Greater Manchester SUDC Service. The consultants contribute to the planning, organisation and management of services through a wide range of committees and working parties, both in health and multi-agency settings.
Referrals are received from a wide range of sources including:
- GPs
- Hospital and community consultants
- Health visitors
- School nurses
- Therapists
Referrals should be sent to Universal Square (Central Office) using the Children’s Community Services’ referral form (see below).
Please refer to Information Standards for Community Paediatric Referrals.
